Bindi Society

Bindi Society is three talented women musicians based in the San Francisco Bay Area. At the core of the music is the beauty of the harp and the unique, guitar-like style of harpist Barbara Imhoff. Irish vocalist Cait McWhir provides haunting interpretations of Indian chants, Hebrew prayers with a Celtic touch. Tina Blaine, talented World Music Percussionist, adds Dumbec, Djembe, Santur, Udu Drum, Marimba and backup vocals to the mix. This beautiful tapestry of sounds is woven together in the new release "Falling in Light", eight original songs infused with depth, spiritual mystery and beauty.

A euphoric afternoon of eclectic, rhythmic and otherwordly global and classical music with instruments from Europe, Africa and Asia with kick-ass electric bass.

The afternoon concert will feature the Bindi Society, and world-renowned Baroque flute virtuosos Stephen Schultz and Mindy Rosenfeld of Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra.

The Bindi Society's music is inspired by an array of global traditions accentuated by a deep love of ancient languages. Haunting vocals sung in Ancient Gaelic, Sanskrit, Hebrew and English accompany classically-tinged groove harp, harmonium, world percussion, santur, marimba and kick-ass electric basshighlighting the musical talents of Barbara Imhoff, Cait McWhir and bean (Tina Blaine) with Nate Pitt.

An exotic fusion of timbres and disciplines, Bindi Society combines Celtic, Indian and Middle Eastern-style vocals with harp and world percussion. The ensemble’s instruments and voices merge to produce ethereal timbres and resonant harmonic overtones. The sound is reminiscent of Imhoff's Beasts of Paradise and Haunted by Waters, Mcwhir and Blaine's original collaboration. Stephen Schultz will dazzle and delight, demonstrating his unique method of extending his classical roots on processed baroque flute and Hümmelchen (german pipes) in solos and duets with Mindy Rosenfeld.

About the music...

Dayala, Sharinam and Narayana are personalized interpretations of Vedic and Sanskrit chants from India.

The Mourner’s Kaddish is a reimagining of the Hebrew prayer.

‘Bela’ is influenced by traditional Eastern European folk music and named in honor of composer Béla Bartok.

Shivoham is inspired by Manish Vyas’s original song of the same name (on 'Sattva', White Swan Records).

Several of the tracks began with guitar-like harp arrangements with effects processing influenced greatly by bands such as Pink Floyd and Zeppelin.

Storm Pond Bird was originally written by Diana Trimble and Kalonica McQuesten (Elbows Akimbo). The song title and the harp parts remain the same in this version.
