Producer · Songwriter · Musician · Mastering Engineer
Jeff Gross runs 144 Studios in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley, a full-service room for music and film — recording, mixing, mastering, editing, voice-over, foley and post. He grew up in a New York household where, in his words, "dad sang and played every instrument but the harp." He started on piano, picked up drums in high school, then moved to California to attend the Dick Grove School of Music, where he discovered electronic music while finishing a degree in audio engineering.
As a percussionist, he's recorded and shared stages with Béla Fleck & the Flecktones, Carly Simon, Dwight Yoakam, Al Stewart, Peter White, Craig Chaquico and Gary Wright ("Dreamweaver"). He's worked with engineers and players including Grammy winner Matty Spindel (Santana's Supernatural), Philip Bynoe (Steve Vai), Kevin Ricard (Stevie Wonder), Doug Ingle (Iron Butterfly), and Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa). With Spindel, Jeff played percussion, programming and loops on Rick Springfield's The Day After Yesterday.
His writing credits span television and film — music for Baywatch, MTV's Road Rules and Real World, FOX, CNN, and the score and theme to the film Poolhall Junkies (starring Chazz Palminteri, Christopher Walken and Rod Steiger). He produced and engineered two live records for the late blues singer Mickey Champion — her first recordings since the 1960s — and co-produced records for RAJ, Jamestowne, and the third Spanish guitar record from Yussi (Ricky Martin's guitarist).
Across the X DOT 25 Music catalog, Jeff is the mastering engineer behind L. Shankar's Full Moon and Over the Stars, Yussi's electronic and rock excursions, Emad Bonakdar's guitar work, the dual-edged worlds of Ashavahishta and Michael Dane Hager, and beyond.
